Hello America, Quotes #3

Quote #1: Pg 83, thought by Elli,

“ Is it true love or am I moved by the tender touch of a father I have so sorely missed.”

This quote is very heart warming because you can feel the sadness in Elli’s voice. I would feel the exact same way if I didn’t have a dad, or someone to even fill the spot of a dad. Elli and her family came to America to get a new life, a new start at what they had before the Holocaust and the terrible things that happened. Elli is constantly missing her father and she always wants to make sure that she is doing what Elli’s father would want her to do. Elli would ask herself, would my dad think that would be okay? She is trying to start her life over, and she needs to let go of her dad.

I have a connection to that because after my grandpa died and I always feel like a whole is in my heart and that is what is keeping me back from various different things. I don’t even have someone to fill the spot of my grandpa and nobody will ever be able to. I have almost the same feeling as Elli from this quote.

Question #1: What happened to her father?

Quote #2: Pg 94, thought by Elli,

“This is why I love America! The knowledge of possibilities and the freedom to achieve, if only I work hard.”

This is a big move for Elli and her family and I think that they are going to have many more struggles to face later on in the book. One thing at the end is that she has to work hard and I don’t think that Elli should have to work; I think that she should go to school and have a real life and a time to start her life over. Her mom should have to work and then Elli could go to school and everything. Elli’s mom may find something that she is very good at and will like it is very possible. Elli shouldn’t have to work for the money in the family her mom should have to.

Before I have felt like I have been working harder at something then someone else and then we both get the same credit for it. That is almost exactly what is happening to Elli, her mom is making her work so she doesn’t have to, in a way.

Question #2: Put your self in Elli’s position. Would you rather work like she is or would you rather go to school and have a chance to start your life over? Why?

Hello America, Quotes #2

Quote #1: Pg, 43, thought by Elli,

“In America are fairy tales real?”

Elli really has no idea how different is from her country to America. Everything is more money, people act different, there are more people and it must be a huge change for Elli to make. Before Elli and her mom came to America they were starving in the Holocaust and now they see things that they never thought they would ever see, like girls throwing away shoes because a strap broke or something silly like that, to her. Its not just easy for her and her mom either because they came here with nothing and now they have to work instead of school and I don’t think this is what Elli pictured America to be.

Before I have felt if something is real or not, I have gone and seen places that are so amazing that I cant believe my eyes. I have seen different things that Elli has but in the same way it is affecting her life because she has to live with it, and I only have to look at it I don’t incorporate it into my life.

Question #1: What is one bad thing that happens to Elli and her mom when they go shopping? Why did that happen?

Quote #2: Pg, 51, thought by Elli,

“Our first Passover Seder in America- its is a happy event after all.”

They have brought their religion into America and still celebrate it the same way that they used to in their old country. No madder where they went they always had a piece of Judaism with them. They weren’t the only people who celebrate it either; they have their family who helped them get a start in America, and help start their lives over again.

No madder where I would go in life I feel that I would also celebrate every holiday that I would used to. It wouldn’t be any different, except that we would be with different people and I would be in a different place but location, and people don’t madder. It only madders if you celebrate your religion.

Question #2: What is Elli doing to get used to America?

Hello, America Quotes #1

Quote #1: Pg 1, thought by Elli,

“Will you embrace me as a daughter yearning to belong, an equal among equals, or will I forever remain a stranger, as on the other side of the ocean?”

Elli and her mother came here to be accepted as Jews and to not be judged. In their old country they had to go through the Holocaust and almost all of their family was killed because of that. They don’t know how America will turn out for them but Elli knows that it will be better then the Holocaust.

I think that Elli’s mom is making a good decision, by coming to America because they both need a new start. Where they will be treated like people and not just Jews. I would make the same decision if I were in Elli’s mom position.

Question #1: Is America everything that she expected or something different? Explain.

Quote #2: Pg 19, thought by Elli,

“The walk from the pier to my aunt and uncle’s flat on avenue D, remains one of the most exciting, one of the most memorable, occasions of my life.”

When Elli came to New York, she was so excited to start her life over and to hopefully become a new person in America. Elli had to starve, to walk miles with shoes that were 2 sizes too small for her and she had to struggle all the way through the Holocaust to get to this point. Elli should be able to have a good rest of her life and since she came to America it has been a great experience for her and her life is going to turn around from when Elli saw the Statue of Liberty.

Her aunt and uncle have made great choices in the book, by letting Elli and her mom stay with them. Elli’s aunt and uncle have shown them around and answered any questions Elli or her mom might have had. Her aunt and uncle, don’t know how hard it was for them to get to this point but I think that they will do what ever they can to make them feel like they are wanted.

Question #2: Who is she walking with when she is going to her aunt and uncles house?

Field trip Reflection

From Haven to Home Museum

On Wednesday we went to From Haven to Home Museum in Liberty Station. I think the purpose of going to this museum was to learn about the different reasons and the different people that moved here from another country. Jews weren’t treated the same as other people in the world they were looked at different people because of their religion. In some states they wouldn’t accept Jews, Hitler and the Nazis even tried to eliminate the Jews completely from the world. Many Jews had to flee from other countries because America because back then America wasn’t as cruel as most other countries.

Since I am Jewish I new mostly everything from the exhibit but I really find the Jewish religion very interesting and there is a lot to learn. Jews started traveling to America in 1654. When they moved here there wasn’t a lot of room for them so they were crammed, 2 families in one apartment, in New York. Hitler was someone who hated Jews and wanted to have nothing more to do with them, and many other people hated the Jews so they helped Hitler and he was very powerful. That became something called the Holocaust, they would send Jews to Concentration Camps where they would either be killed or worked to death. They killed over 6 million Jews and to this day no Jew had forgotten that terrible time.

These Jews had to struggle so hard and just for freedom. One thing that I learned that I didn’t know before was that, when many Jews were in New York there was a riot by 20,000 Jewish women. They came into mostly all meat markets and shops, and came and through all of the meat onto the street. They did this because regular meat for a non- Jews was 9 cents and Kosher meat for Jews was 18 cents. They were horrified and this needed to change, but the meat markets changed it down to 14 cents so they were pleased again. Those are many of the various things that I learned and already knew about the Jewish history and to know that I have a connection with these Jewish immigrants.

Photograph: My favorite picture was a picture of a little girl on someone’s shoulders, but you can’t see the person’s shoulders. You can only see her back and she is holding an American Flag. In the background you can see tall buildings, in Chicago, you can also tell that there are many other people because of the other flags next to the girl. You can tell that she doesn’t really know where she is because she is young and that they are having some kind of protest or rally.

Quote: "When I left my country Vietnam, I didn’t really know that I would probably never come back again. I was just 10 years old. I knew my life would begin from this moment."

~Ngoe Nguyen

I liked this Quote because it is heart filled and you could tell that when she moved she was scared. Even though she was 10 she still understood that her life was going to change and it was never going to be the same. I would also be scared if I was leaving my country, if I was that young and I would know that my life would be different for the rest of the time that I would live.

Immigrant Reflection

An immigrant is a person or persons who moves to another country, to get a better life or a better living. In the US we have many immigrants that have traveled here from all over the world and who have come here to get a better life or there is some freedom problem from where they live. They could also have a problem that they don't like, for instance in some places outside of the United States, you cant talk bad about the Government and here you can. There are different freedom rights in the US then most other countries, almost every country is different and that is why people don't want to stay in their country.

Our country is very different then most other countries in the world. We have, freedom of speech, religion, everyone here treats everyone equally and many more. The problem with other countries is that people aren’t treated equally and they don’t all have the same rights as we do either. That is one of the main reasons that people want to move to the US from their countries.

Immigrants have affected the whole United States, but it isn’t a bad thing. Since other people have come here, from different places they have showed us different cultures, languages, food and have brought different laws with them for us to see. The United States wouldn’t be the way it is today if people didn’t travel from other countries. I think that immigrants have affected every single person in the US, in a good way and a bad way. Personally I have been affected because I have some friends that have come from other countries and they have affected my life. All in all you can see that immigrants have made a big input on the World today.
