Book Review

The Diary of a Young Girl:

Anne Frank

Madeline M.

I read the book The Diary of Anne Frank written by Anne Frank. This book is about a girl who has to hide from the nazis, in order to survive during  World War II in her country. She lived upstairs in a vacant office with seven other people.  They were thrown together and had to survive with little food and water. If she was found to be in hiding she would be sent to a concentration camp. She had to live with the fact that she could die any second.  Anne's dad found and shared this diary with thousands of people.

I would recommend this book because it has a lot of details and it really shows how terrible Anne's life was. Plus the lives of many others were during this time in history.  All of this was taking place during World War II. Anne uses tones of details, about how hard her life is and she also describes how she had to live with the same people locked up in an office building for over 2 years. When I am reading the book I can really feel like I am there with her, and I can picture what everybody is doing, in the 'Secret Annex' and how they look.

Something that I didn't enjoy about this book is that when I am reading it feels like I am reading in slow motion because she wrote a lot and mostly she was bored. The book did not have a lot of action sequences because her access to the world was very limited.  Anne wrote it over the course of over 2 years which was just a small part of the time that the war went on for.  I can tell by her writing that Anne must have been educated since this was well written and her story was so well told throughout her journals.

Anne is always positive, even though she is hiding to save her life. The details that she added about her everyday life were fascinating to me.  At times the family had to be silent for hours so that way, no one would discover that they were hiding. This book shows the struggles she went through, and basically what the time was like back then in World War II. I don’t know what I would do if I was Anne, first off she didn’t even bring enough stuff to do for two years and how can she live talking to the same people and doing the same thing every single day. If they knew that they weren’t going to live in the first place then why don’t they try and rebel against the Nazis, or at least try to live like normal people.

In this book I found a lot of very inspiring and touching quotes, one quote that I had found said “Kitty, it doesn’t really matter to me whether I live of die, I just know that the world will keep spinning on without me,” written by Anne Frank. I don’t know if I could say that to myself knowing that I would leave the earth very soon one day and never come back. Anne had to act and was expected to act like a grownup and make bigger choices that could affect her life. I know that I couldn’t do that, even if I was in Anne’s position and I knew that she wasn’t ready for that either. The sad part about Anne’s life is that she can’t even go outside to get some fresh air, she was locked up in that small office building for two years without going outside and then her life is ended so early at the hands of the Nazi’s.

This whole entire book was somewhat depressing to me, her best news is that the potatoes aren’t going bad and they are still good to eat. Anne ate pretty much the same thing every single day, and plus they had to start skipping breakfast, because they didn’t have enough food for three meals. Most people could not understand how that would feel now days, to be locked up and to be starving all the time.  All in all you can see that I do suggest this book, if you don’t mind, sad stories but it is still a great novel with very good details.   This is a story that everyone should read to help them appreciate the life they have.
